ANOTHER TROPHY POINT SEASON
Summer is probably one of my favorite times of the year to be in the band. Things seem to be more relaxed even though they're busy at the same time. It's the time of the year the concert band performs a pretty regular slate of concerts. The rest of the year is mixed in with all kinds of ceremonies, special events, marching, and yes of course, football games. But during the summer, we mostly just focus on one thing: playing concerts. There are certainly ceremonies and other jobs we seem to fit in to the busy schedule, but for the most part, it's all about performing. The band seems to hit its stride and this summer was no different. Not to mention, I get to relive my childhood as the coach of the band softball team. Although we didn't defend last year's championship, we fought hard but lost in the semi finals to a tough West Point DPW team. Can't wait till next year!
As the summer closes with our last performance of the concert series on labor day every year, we then usher in the start of the Army football season (now 6 weeks in). The band participates pretty heavily in the season through weekly pass in reviews (military parade before the games) as well as pre game and halftime performances at all home games. It remains one of the band's biggest ties to the academy. We even perform in the stands next to the cadet spirit band. It truly is one of the more unique college football atmospheres with 4,000 screaming cadets behind you (and I even grew up in the SEC football world). If only army could actually break the curse and beat Navy one of these days!
